Insomnia

Simply put, insomnia is the inability to obtain sufficient sleep. It is frequently associated with stress. Anxiety, depression, tension, emotional arousal and lifestyle changes can disturb the harmony of important neurotransmitters in our body leading to disturbed slumber.

Whilst some wait for the insomnia to self-correct, many others seek medications to combat the problem. Even though pharmaceutical assistance may sometimes be necessary, there are many key factors to consider if you are suffering from sleeping problems.

Certain food and drinks sometimes impair the quality of a good night's rest. Tea, coffee, cocoa, carbonated drinks that contain caffeine (eg. cola) and alcohol are known to influence the nervous system's activity and disturb sleep. If you must have a drink in the afternoon, go for relaxing herbal teas instead. Chamomile and Peppermint teas are excellent for relaxing the body and mind. They also have a very soothing effect on the digestive system, relieving indigestion and flatulence.

Herbs For Better Sleep
Throughout the ages, certain herbs have been recognized for their gentle, safe and calming properties. They are used to calm the body and mind so that sleep comes naturally to that person. After a few days of usage, you will definitely notice an improvement in the quality of sleep. And best of all, these herbs do not cause addiction or daytime drowsiness. The sleep-regulating properties allow them to be used for a period of weeks, months or just as required.

Hypericum - exerts a calming effect while at the same time restoring the health of the nervous system. This herb is especially beneficial for people complaining of difficulty falling asleep or waking up too early and not being able to fall asleep again. Herbalists also recommend Hypericum for anxiety, tension, irritability and mild to moderate depression.

Zizyphus - is a sweet-tasting Chinese herb. It is highly reputed for treating insomnia that is due to nervous exhaustion, restlessness and anxiety. The Chinese also have a long traditional use for Zizyphus to help heart palpitations, excessive sweating and repeated awakenings with difficulty returning to sleep (eg during menopause).

Valerian – is the most widely used herb for treating sleeping problems. Many attest to this herb’s action of allowing one to fall asleep faster, deeper sleep, enjoy longer periods of sleep and improving overall sleep quality.
