Haemorrhoids

Fortunately, this condition is not as serious as it sounds! More than half the people over 50 years old suffer from haemorrhoids but with our current diet and lifestyle, younger people are getting them too. Haemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen and inflamed vein tissues in the rectal area. They are protrusions caused by distension in the anal region. Haemorrhoids can occur inside as well as outside the anal orifice. Typical symptoms of haemorrhoids include burning, itching or pain sensation around the rectum. Sometimes there may be bright, red blood seen on surface of the stool, the toilet tissue or the toilet bowl. Many do not seek medical attention until there are intolerable pain, severe bleeding (enough to cause anaemia) or extreme swelling. Should you experience blood stains after defaecation and have not verified with a doctor if it is in fact due to haemorrhoids, please a proper diagnosis as this symptom can also be caused by other more serious diseases.

Haemorrhoids are caused by weakness of the veins in the rectal area. Sitting or standing for long periods of time and increased pressure on the veins – lifting heavy objects, pregnancy and frequent straining during bowel movement – can aggravate the condition. A diet low in fiber with resulting constipation is believed to be the major cause of haemorrhoids. Other forms of pressure around the anal veins such as liver problems, obesity, overuse of laxatives and lack of exercise are known to aggravate or cause haemorrhoids. Although prescription medicine may be the choice for severe haemorrhoids, herbs may be a gentle alternative for those with mild and moderate problems. Whatever it is, a diet less than healthy should be corrected in order to see lasting results and anything near to a cure. Fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains are good sources of fiber. If constipation is a factor, the herbs Psyllium husk and Slippery Elm are highly recommended. Strong-coloured berries such as blackberry, blueberry and cherry contain plant compounds like anthocyanidins and proanthocyanidins that can help strengthen the veins and prevent future haemorrhoids whilst helping the current ones to heal.

Herbs To Heal
Time-proven herbs help to strengthen blood vessels, decrease swelling and inflammation. They also stop the bleeding, heal the haemorrohoids and prevent future problems.

Horse Chestnut – This herb has anti-inflammatory and astringent actions, helping to reduce swelling and bleeding. Horse Chestnut has a strong traditional usage for toning and strengthening the veins thus making it excellent for haemorrhoids and varicose veins. This herb works exceptionally well when combined with Butcher’s Broom and Witch Hazel.

Butcher’s Broom – The root of this plant makes an excellent combination for the above herb, having very similar action to Horse Chestnut. It is one of the most popular and effective herbs for haemorrhoids. Butcher’s Broom also has a long history of use for leg pains caused by swollen veins. It should be taken orally and applied as a cream for best effect.

Witch Hazel – An excellent astringent herb that helps to reduce bleeding and shrink swollen tissues. For external use, it is most convenient to look for commercial Witch Hazel water that is sometimes available in pharmacies. For internal consumption, the liquid extract form may be dispensed by a herbalist.

Healing Baths

Use a tub that is large enough for you to sit in with the legs hanging out over the sides. Fill tub with enough lukewarm water to cover your pelvic area. A bath with warm water provides temporary relief from the discomfort of haemorrhoids by stimulating blood circulation and soothing the inflammation. To make a more effective bath, add soothing herbs like Chamomile and Witch Hazel.
